NOT CONTENT WITH GIVING RUSSIA tons of leeway by providing President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine with limited military support, President Trump has given the green light for Hungary’s Viktor Orban to buy more Russian oil and gas; something that widely flouts agreements between the world economies to not buy the said oil and gas. And of course President Vladimir Putin looks on and smiles.
This has not been the case with India for example, where there was real diplomatic fallout between Washington and Delhi over its purchase of Russian fossil fuels, threatened to further scramble the world economy. This despite the seemingly great relationship that Trump and Prime Minister Modi have.
Hungary is the so called “black sheep” of the EU and NATO. It IS in these elite clubs, but every club has rules, those written and of course that are unwritten. Yes there may not be a rule that you shouldn’t cozy up to the authoritarians of the world and support their economy by purchasing their oil-for war.
Hungary will not be kicked out of NATO, there is too much at stake for Europe militarily and besides that Orban and Trump are quite chummy, but the EU is a different case. Just as Brexit showed, you leave, either by choice or perhaps with some help.
